Jimmy Carter is a fascinating figure in American history, and his contributions to both domestic and international affairs are remarkable. He has truly left his mark on the world and will continue to inspire people for generations to come.
1. He is the only United States president to have served his full term and never been defeated in an election, either during primary or general elections.
2. Carter was a successful peanut farmer before he became President of the United States in 1977.
3. His mother, Lillian Gordy Carter, was one of the first women to graduate from Vanderbilt University’s School of Nursing in 1919.
4. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for “his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development” .
5. In 1994, Carter joined with former U.S. president Gerald Ford to launch the Carter-Ford Center for Human Rights, and he has since been involved in a number of human rights initiatives around the world.
6. He was a nuclear engineer in the US Navy after graduating from Annapolis.
7. In 1982, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter founded The Carter Center, which is “a nongovernmental, not-for-profit organization that works to advance peace and health worldwide”.
8. After leaving office as President of the United States in 1981, he taught courses on U.S.-Soviet relations at Emory University for over 20 years .
9. In addition to his teaching activities at Emory, Carter has written more than 20 books and established the Global 2000 initiative, which continues to work for global food security.
10. He was inducted into the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor in 2007 for his service as a nuclear engineer aboard submarines during the Cold War. This recognition is given to “outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to naval aviation”.
